First soccer game

I decided to reduce the ultimate load this summer to enjoy some other activities. I joined a women’s soccer league in my community and we had our first game tonight. I’ve dabbled in soccer before so know a little bit about the game, but I’m definitely not used to using my feet instead of my hands.

Got off to a bit of shaky start. Showed up late-ish since the second period was wrapping up on the Canuck’s game…(plus ulti always starts late so surely all sports must do the same…apparently not the case)–YEAH CANUCKS. Got home just in time to see them win in OT and sweep the Blues in 4!!! Got to the game, threw on my shin pads, socks and cleats and kicked the ball around for a minute or so. Felt pretty good, until I got on the field. I must have had at least 3 kicks where I completely missed the ball….how embarrassing. Swung my leg and zero contact with nothing but air!

Second half was much better. I managed to play almost every position on the field but keeper. With 5 minutes left (scoreless so far), I was playing left forward, got around the D and passed for an assist!!!! Luckily the person that I passed to was more competent with the ball and her legs than myself and kicked it perfectly in. Was pretty stoked and am excited for the next game. Maybe I’ll show up a bit earlier and do a better job of warming up.

Having some issues with soccer, coming from ultimate. Find there’s a lot of standing around so I chase the ball and catch myself out of position. Just doesn’t make sense to me to stand around waiting. I guess me swarming the ball along with everyone else is not very helpful but at least I was getting some exercise!

Exploring Alberta

Jeff and I have both been busy driving around Alberta, thus the lack of posts. Jeff went to Lethbridge with Mark to check out the disc golf course there. Apparently it was really long and although he enjoyed it, he said it’s not really worth making the trip for again anytime soon.

As for me, I was up in Edmonton for work on Thursday and then went to Nordegg on the weekend with Terri to visit our friend Andrea. She is up teaching grade 5/6 on a reserve. She was a wonderful hostess and gave us the complete Nordegg experience: hiking, tour of the school, trip to the Crescent Falls and a tour of Rocky Mountain House. Good visit (along with an old fashion slumber party) and great food.

Was nice to escape from the city for a while but Nordegg was a little remote for my needs and Andrea is doing a wonderful job up there with those kids!

Pictures to follow…

In other news, pretty excited about my first soccer game tomorrow. Signed up for a women’s league on Tuesdays and Thursdays until June (which I’ve probably talked about before). Will be strange to be running around a field not chasing a frisbee, but should be fun. Hopefully I manage to get at least one goal this season :)

Playoff Pool

It’s been a while since I’ve blogged … so what is going on?

Not that much besides trying to plan our summer…. which is surprisingly busy considering it’s not even the middle of April and we have almost every weekend booked.  We still haven’t figured out our Ulti plans for the summer but that’s not really surprising.  We do however plan to do lots of biking, disc golfing, playing soccer (lindsay) and refing soccer.   Note:  I was roped in by the neighbours when we were small chatting…. Neighbour:  oh YOU could ref soccer! Wanna make $20 bucks per game?    Jeff:  um…  I guess so.  (thinking:  I get a case a beer per game I ref).

Anyway, should be a fun summer.

In other news the NHL hockey playoffs start this Wed.  How exciting!  As you may remember we usually attend the Powell Pool, however, this year we aren’t going to make it because I’m at home sick.  boo!   SO instead we are entering the CBC pool. You should all enter too… it’s free, you can win a Kia car and you can join our “group” which is called “The Silly Sills” … password: willow

OK. Go enter the CBC Hockey Night In Canada Playoff Pool now!

Don’t know anything about hockey?  Don’t worry we say most Calgarians don’t know much either as they cheer for the Flames…  I kid, I kid.  But seriously, luck usually has a bigger factor than skill.

Biking

Finally now that Spring has decided to arrive here in Calgary, we managed to get out for our first bike ride of the season. For the most part it was clear but there were some snow covered areas. 1-2 inches of snow is doable on a bike but over 5 is slightly more challenging and boarding on dangerous (ask Jeff). Biking in snow is a lot like sand, for all of you who that have gone biking in Moab.

Should be a great biking season. Bikes are tuned up and ready to go. They say it’s like riding a bike but I really have forgotten everything since last year. Can’t wait till the city cleans the gravel so we can start biking to work. I guess I’ll cut them some slack though since they are busy delivering recycling bins.

Happy Easter!

Saving Luna

Who’s Luna? He’s the cutest whale ever (and I think Willow in whale form…way too friendly and clingy for an animal). Jeff and I watched the documentary last night and I highly recommend seeing it. It is a story of an orca whale living on the West Coast of Vancouver island who loves to make friends with humans. And the best news is that if you missed it you can catch it again tomorrow on CBC:

Saving Luna

Thanks for the great recommendation Sue — we loved it! So neat that you know the people who made it. I sure wish I met Luna. I imagine it was a lot like swimming with the dolphins in Hawaii.

If you tune in, be sure to bring some kleenex (and a dart board as you may need to get out some vented anger midway when you hear the ridiculous opinions of some people involved).

House maintanence continued

Been busy with stuff around the house lately. Also had a few days of migraine trouble so really didn’t feel like posting. Got a migraine after playing a tough Ultimate indoor final against the Wolverines; you can read Heath’s great recap here. Who knew there would be so much running in a hat league? Apparently not me as I didn’t prepare for the game (ie. drank very little water all day Sunday) and definitely paid the consequences for 3 days.

Decided that since we had an entire room emptied from painting that we would steam clean our carpets. I’ll admit that in the time that we’ve lived in our house, we have never cleaned them. It took less than a day to do and was SO worth it. The amount of dirt that came out of them was disgusting!

First step, moving all the furniture off of the carpets. Willow managed to find a cozy place to sleep amid the chaos.

Second step, vacuuming for the second time after Bob went home (cat hair everywhere!). Even on the second around go we still got tons of hair. Unless Jeff and I are going gray, I’m pretty sure that’s not our hair:

Step three, cleaning the carpets with the Rug Doctor. Just rented it from Co-op. Cheap and very effective:

Nice work Jeff!

Fourth step, enjoy the nice clean carpets:

Lastly, go to the movies since you can’t sit or step anywhere in your house and there is furniture everywhere!

The next day we did some mopping so all of our floors are spotless and our place looks brand new!
